Can you be Allergic to exercise?

For many people, exercising is not an enjoyable task, it requires sacrifice, and they would rather spend their time on anything else. However, and believe it or not, there are people who although they want to lead an active and healthy life, are allergic to exercise.

There is a fairly rare condition known as exercise-induced anaphylaxis, which consists of a serious allergic reaction that can endanger the lives of people.

An unusual allergy

Exercise-induced anaphylaxis was first described in 1979 and is estimated to affect about 50 people out of every 100,000.

While it is a condition that has increased among allergy sufferers, researchers and doctors still do not know exactly why it occurs.

For 30 to 50% of people who suffer from it, the reaction is generated by combining certain types of foods (such as peanuts, shellfish or eggs) and exercise, while for others, physical activity triggers a reaction to drugs such as aspirin.

Its main symptomsExercise-induced anaphylaxis can cause hives, vomiting, fainting, and shortess of breath during workouts. Symptoms can last up to four hours, and experts say it is not an average food allergy.

People who suffer from it do not have that reaction unless they exercise just after eating those foods.

Many women experience this allergy when they are at the point of their menstrual cycle.

Experts argue that the amount of exercise needed to cause this condition varies with each person.

Activities such as running and jogging are likely to provoke these attacks, although other activities such as dancing, skiing or volleyball can also cause a reaction.

Some theories about the condition

While it is not known exactly what causes the connection between exercise and anaphylaxis, some theories argue that it has to do with the physiological changes that occur in the body with exercise.

Increased blood flow could push sensitive immune cells around the body. It may also happen that certain proteins in the intestine change their behavior during exercise, causing an allergic reaction.

Since the condition is difficult to recreate in a laboratory, the experts have not been able to prove these theories.

A spontaneous reaction

Fortunately, the diagnosis of this condition is simple, and once people are diagnosed, their symptoms can be managed, avoiding food and drugs before exercise that can trigger a reaction. In many cases, it is also recommended to carry an epinephrine pencil or autoinjector to prevent an attack.

It is certainly an unusual condition, and it may also appear spontaneously, regardless of whether you have been exercising in the same way for a long time.

Although some serious side effects are rare, this type of condition is often not diagnosed. That is why it is important to know this type of allergy and avoid any reaction that brings health consequences. Did you know that there was an allergy to exercise?
